Why Reading Is Essential for a Young Man’s Personal Growth and How to Build a Reading Habit

Have you ever wondered what you should be doing to make the most of your time? I’m sure you want to make money, improve your relationships, and become smarter.

Reading is the perfect habit to implement into your daily routine to accomplish all of that.

Why Read in the First Place?

Reading introduces you to new ideas which can help you act more effectively in the world. You’re not limited to your own narrow existence for information that will help you.
People who are successful sometimes publish books to share their knowledge with you so that you can learn and improve your life.
I assume… you want to improve your life… right?
So the first benefit is knowledge.
But it also improves your focus. No more low attention spans if you’re constantly sitting down to read a book for an hour or two.
Focus is valuable because everything that you want in life requires it.
No one will ever be successful if they can’t even focus on something for ten minutes.
Knowledge and focus are key components toward achieving a better life because they boost your utility.
And the more useful you are, the more you get paid and the more you can build with your skills as a young man.

How to Build a Reading Habit

Simply read what you like. This can be fiction, non-fiction. Any genre, really.
As long as you enjoy it and you don’t hate it.
If you’re coming from your phone and your fried brain (because of overstimulation online) simply turn on a grayscale color filter.
This will feel like you’re withdrawing, but stick through it.
Remember why you want to install this habit in the first place. You have to bear it for now and I promise it’ll get easier.
That phone gives out too much dopamine for the amount of effort you’re putting in and it’s ruining your potential to grow as a person and to improve all the other areas of your life.
Delete any entertainment from your devices because it’s genuinely just distracting you from getting all the other areas of your life together.
You do not have time to be wasting 4-5 hours of screen time on something that doesn’t improve your life.
It just leads to meaningless hedonism and laziness. And it won’t even make you happy. It just feels empty.
You’re a young man. This time is sacred. You need to build the best life possible right now so that you can enjoy life young instead of old.
So now that you’ve deleted all your entertainment apps, stopped watching entertainment videos, and turned on grayscale… focus on books. OR anything that helps you improve your life. And if you don’t know what that looks like then spend time thinking about it.

Young Man’s Personal Growth Journey

So if the answer to happiness isn’t meaningless hedonism, what is it?
You need to do things that are meaningful.
Doing things that are meaningful means engaging in actions or pursuits that align with your values, purpose, or a sense of fulfillment.
It means contributing to a cause or community that you care about.
This will give you lasting fulfillment instead of immediate gratification. So think about your purpose.
What reason do you have to live? What are you living for?
You can’t find that in doing nothing all day or entertaining yourself to death. You must learn the art of delayed gratification.
And reading will help you learn things to provide value to people. Which serves your purpose.
So reading is necessary.
